Every year in the Nicoya Gulf of Costa Rica, a special day is reserved to honor the Virgin of Mount Carmel.

This past weekend in Costa Rica, a special event was celebrated. Since 1913, the Virgin of the Sea Festivals have been held every year on the Saturday closest to July 16. This colorful celebration brings out brightly decorated boats and yachts in the Nicoya Gulf to commemorate the Virgin of Mount Carmel, Puntarena's Patron Saint. Other events include concerts, dances, sports events, firewords and of course plenty of Central American food.
