Guest of the San Ignacio Resort Hotel or not, anyone can enjoy their onsite tours, including the very worthwhile Green Iguana Project. Located in Cayo, Belize.

Looking civilized enough with its beautifully tiled bathrooms, air-conditioned rooms, and cable TV, internet and telephone, the San Ignacio Resort Hotel likes to call themselves the "only jungle in town." Once you find out their worthwhile projects, it's understandable why. The following tours, all done onsite within the hotel's premises, require "easy to mild" walking.

Green Iguana Project

The hotel operates the Green Iguana Project, a program designed to help preserve the endangered iguanas. Curators increase the rate of the iguanas surviving by 80% by collecting iguana eggs from the wild, incubating them, then releasing them anywhere from 9 months to a year after hatching. Guests can experience this process at their "Iguanaland" exhibit.

The experience, which will involve holding these creatures, takes about an hour and can be combined with other tours offered in the hotel. For a US$10.00 donation for each iguana, guests can "adopt" the little hatchlings and even give them names. They will also receive an adoption certificate and an iguana shirt.

Medicinal Jungle Trail

The Medicinal Jungle Trail is another worthwhile adventure at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. For about US$5.00, this 45-minute trail takes the guest on a hike at its 14-acre jungle preserve. With a highly knowledgeable guide, the guest can encounter more than 70 species of plants and trees and around 150 species of birds.

Birdwatching

Speaking of birds, the hotel offers their own Bird Watching tour onsite. The bird watcher will have the opportunity to view the 175 recorded birds, including toucans, hummingbirds and orioles.
