Tegicugalpa, Honduras

There are several hotels in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, but one in particular, the InterContinental combines luxury and convenience.

Note: Although I stayed in both the Guest Room and the Suite, this review is for the latter.

Pros

· Located in front of the MultiPlaza, the largest mall in the Tegucigalpa

· The suite includes a daily complimentary breakfast and finger food happy hour, both located on the very top floor; free internet; unlimited bottled water; two television sets

Cons

· Maybe it was our room, but there was an unpleasant odor coming out of the shower drain.

· Suite is pricey. Ask about their discount rates.

CONVENIENCE

The InterContinental Hotel is located in front of the MultiPlaza, the biggest mall in the city. Some areas of interest inside the mall that the InterContinental guest may benefit from is the grocery store located at the back of the mall, and an Internet café located at the front where the guest can call to the United States for a few lempiras per minute. Although the mall has a food court with more than a dozen eateries, the InterContinental is also located within walking distance of two family friendly stand-alone restaurants: Tony Roma’s and Las Cebollinas.

FOOD

Each night has a different culinary theme at the Azulejos, the restaurant at the InterContinental, including Steak, Seafood, Paella, Tapas, and Asian nights. In addition to the themed nights, there is a regular menu. At the very top level of the hotel is where suite guests can enjoy breakfast in the morning and finger foods in the late afternoon, for no additional costs.

ROOMS

There is a mini refrigerator in the main bedroom with liquor and candy bars for a fee. But since there is a mall right in front of the hotel, it doesn’t make sense to pay that much. A handy service is the hotel’s unlimited bottled water (I have spoken with some people who have stayed at a suite at the InterContinental and they have said it was difficult getting the staff to supply the water, but my family and I have never had a problem).

Staying in the InterContinental with a 18-month-old for 5 weeks was more bearable in a Suite. Our room consisted of two rooms - the bedroom and the living room, separated by a door. Each room had a television with cable TV with feed from a few American channels, but don’t even think about ordering movies from their Pay Per Movie Service. Some of the movies were ancient and many were straight-to-video movies with B-List celebrities. There is free internet service inside the suites, a very handy service for those traveling with laptops.

PRICE

The cost of the suite is very pricey so the guest needs to ask about discount rates for business or government if it's applicable. Also, it doesn't hurt to casually mention that staying at the Tegucigalpa Marriott, a rival hotel, is another option for you.
