Capital: Managua. There are 15 departments (Boaco, Carazo, Chinandega, Chontales, Esteli, Granada, Jinotega, Leon, Madriz, Managua, Masaya, Matagalpa, Nueva Segovia, Rio San Juan, Rivas) and 2 autonomous regions (Atlantico Norte and Atlantico Sur)

Population: 5,570,129 (as of July 2006)

Language: Spanish. English and indigenous languages on the Atlantic coast.

Land Size: Slightly smaller than New York state

Climate: Cooler in midlands and tropical in lowlands.

Natural Disasters: Volcanoes, landslides, earthquakes

Travel Requirements:

  • Passport required
  • Return ticket required
  • Proof of sufficient funds required
  • Visa not required for U.S. citizens

Airlines: Continental Airlines offers daily flights to Managua from Houston while American Airlines offers flights from Miami.

Vaccinations: While there are no required vaccinations for Nicaragua, your doctor may recommend a vaccine for rural areas and in the outskirts of Managua.
