Small locally owned hotels, off-beach locations, villas and special deals mean more travelers can take vacations this spring and summer in the Caribbean.

Although it is a small, flat island, Anguilla offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, along with a wide range of hotels and family activities. Travelers on budgets can find comfortable apartment, hotel and villa accommodations from which to explore all the beaches.

Visitors enjoy such activities as cave exploration, bird watching, and golf as well as the usual water sports of diving, windsurfing, snorkeling and deep sea fishing. Families also plan time at the Play-A-Round, an amusement center with 18-hole miniature golf course, a rock wall, bumper boats and an inflatable obstacle course.

Those staying at villas or resorts without a beach should check the hotels for beach access. For example, at the Malliouhana Hotel the $25 day pass gives access to the beach and pool as well as their children's playground with a pirate ship and 60-foot waterslide. At the Sirena Resort, those dining in their restaurant for lunch have free use of the pool and beach facilities.

On the Beach

  • Arawak Beach Inn offers pastel-colored cottages on the waterfront at Island Harbour. An oceanfront room for two is $175 from Apr. 14-May 31, and $145 from Jun. 1-Dec.18. A meal plan is available.
  • Ferryboat Inn, a small collection of apartments and a beach house on the beach near Blowing Point, offers incredibly reasonable rates for beach front accommodations. One-bedroom apartments are $115 per night for two from Apr. 16 to Dec. 15. For two couples, the beachfront two-bedroom house is $195 a night. All have full kitchens, air-conditioned bedrooms and cable TV.
  • Patsy’s Seaside Villas are one and two-bedroom vacation apartments with kitchens on Sandy Point Beach. Rates are $110 per night to April 14, the $80 per night from April 15-Nov. 15.

Near the Beach

  • Allamanda Beach Club, a two-minute walk from Shoal Bay Beach, offers rooms with air conditioning and full kitchens. A studio for two is $170 per night until Apr. 15, and $110 per night from Apr. 16-December 14. They also offer 5- and 7-night summer packages that lower the rates even more.
  • Lloyd’s Bed and Breakfastis an historic inn now run by the Lloyd family near the Crocus Bay Beach. Each of the nine rooms is uniquely decorated, and all offer air conditioning, TV and ensuite baths. Rates for two are $105 year round.
  • Masara Resort consists of 1- and 2-bedroom villas on bluff overlooking Katouche Bay, with the beach a short walk down the hill. 1-bedroom units for two are $175 per night to Apr. 12 and $125 per night from April 13-Dec. 17.

Travel with a Group

Another way to enjoy the beauty of Anguilla is by renting a private villa. There is a great array of choices, from restored historic homes to new modern structures, and the daily rates for three to four bedroom homes makes them an economical choice for a family or group traveling together.

For example, Moonrise Cottage, a three or four-bedroom home along the rocky coast in Little Harbour, has its own pool and a great view. Accommodations include two master suites with king beds and a room with two twins, all with their own baths. The rate in summer season for 6 guests is $600 per night, and includes a car rental.

Jems Villa, located between Shoal Bay and Island Harbour and near Shoal Bay Beach, is a two-bedroom villa with an additional bedroom on the lower floor. The pool area looks out to the ocean, and the property has a private garden. Rates in summer are $350 per night for two bedrooms, and $420 for three bedrooms.
