Small hotels, off-beach locations and special deals mean more travelers can take vacations this spring and summer on the Caribbean islands of St. Kitts & Nevis

The twin-island state of St. Kitts and Nevis imparts a definite “Old Caribbean” vibe, with luxurious plantation inns, historic sites and gorgeous beaches. But they also offer the modern conveniences of Marriott and Four Seasons resorts with their adjoining golf courses. For a budget vacation, consider some of the locally owned resorts, both on and off the beach.

St. Kitts offers a wealth of activities from golfing on a scenic 18-hole course and touring the historic sites of Brimstone Hill and Romney Manor to hiking through the rainforest to the volcanic crater lake of Mt. Liamuiga and ziplining through old plantation sites with Sky Safari St. Kitts. Many plan their visit to coincide with the annual Music Festival held in late June.

Nevis is even more laid back, with eclectic plantation inns, powder-sand beaches, and monkeys roaming around. Highlights here include the Four Seasons golf course, the Botanical Gardens, the Indian Castle Racetrack, historic Charlestown, and the water sports and biking center at Oualie Beach.

St. Kitts Value Resorts

The main town of Basseterre sits on the Caribbean side, and most activity centers around Frigate Bay (Atlantic) and Timothy Bay (Caribbean) beaches and the Royal St. Kitts Golf Course sitting between them. Good value hotels include:

  • Frigate Bay Resort adjoining the 18-hole Royal St. Kitts Golf Course and a short walk from the Frigate Bay Beach, with views to both the Atlantic and Caribbean. There are two restaurants and pool on site. A Royal Poolside Studio for two is $170 per night to Apr. 15, and $135 Apr. 15-Dec. 5.
  • Ocean Terrace Inn, on a terraced hillside overlooking the port of Basseterre. It has three pools and restaurants on site, and shopping and restaurants within walking distance. A standard room with balcony for two is $195 per night to Apr. 15.
  • Royal St. Kitts Hotel & Casino, formerly the Jack Tar Resort, just to the west of the massive Marriott Resort and adjacent to the golf course. A double Golf Course View or Lake View King room including breakfast is $129 per night after Apr. 15.
  • Timothy Beach Resort, the only hotel located on the island’s Caribbean side beach, offers condominium-type suites with kitchens, and a pool and restaurant on site. A studio suite for two is $190 per night to Apr. 15, and $135 Apr.16-Dec. 15.

Nevis Value Hotels

While the Four Seasons and the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club reflect the high-end accommodations, there are some comfortable budget alternatives on and off the beach. These include:

  • Oualie Beach Resort, with the best beach on the island and adjacent water sports and biking vendors, as well as a good restaurant on site. A deluxe room for two runs $215 per night in low season, but special offers bring the rate down. For stays from Apr. 16-May 22, they offer 35 percent off the rack rate, and from Jul. 1-Aug. 31 a 25 percent discount.
  • Golden Rock Plantation, an historic inn nestled into the Nevis Peak foothills, with cottages offering views to the sea. They operate a restaurant at Pinney’s Beach for the convenience of guests. Cottage doubles are regularly $200 per night from Apr. 15-Dec. 23, but if you book directly with them the rate goes down to $170.
  • Hurricane Cove Bungalows, a collection of small houses on a cliff overlooking Hurricane and Oualie Coves. One-bedroom cottages with kitchens—but no AC or TVs—run $165 per night for a double from Apr. 1-Dec. 19.
