Choosing a ship, what to pack, and how to take advantage of the ship's perks can make the difference between a great cruise and a disaster. These tips will guide you.

The increasing popularity of cruising has created a myriad of possibilities and destinations for the discerning traveler. According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), 4 million passengers in 1990 ballooned to over 12 million in 2007.

Whether island hopping through the Carribean, or seeing the ancient temples of Greece and Rome, there is a cruise for any taste. These 10 tips will help in planning a cruise for maximum fun and fulfillment.

Cruise Ship Do's

1. Plan Ahead

From singles to couples, from no children to kid focused, finding the ideal trip is easy. Study different cruise lines. To get the best rates, try to buy tickets ½ to 1 year in advance. Also remember to bring any medications you may need, including motion sickness pills and sunscreen.

2. Bring a Good Attitude and Manners

Complaining about everything can ruin the trip for everyone. Go through the proper channels for legitimate complaints. Manners are important too. Be courteous and take the time to thank people and be treated in kind. A little thank you can go a long way. Be quiet in the halls and don't slam cabin doors, particularly at night.

3. Take Advantage of On-Ship Activities

There will be a wide variety of interesting activities, Find out what the ship offers and take full advantage. A massage can be very relaxing and here's a secret tip: Often massages can be booked for half price while the ship is docked.

4. Take Advantage of Shore Excursions

Whether shopping, seeing the sights, or simply combing a beach, the cruise line offers many excursions that take passengers to where they want to go. This is also an opportunity to meet fellow passengers and make new acquaintances.

5. Observe Safety Rules

Keep an eye on all drinks and don't leave them unattended. Don't give too much personal information to anyone. Don't take off alone in foreign ports. Lock cabin doors at night and use common sense just like at home.

Cruise Ship Don'ts

1. Don't Pack Too Much

Keep it simple. Pack 2 casual outfits, 2 nicer outfits for evening wear, and something dressy, plus a wrap or jacket for cool evenings.

2. Don't Break Local Laws

Drugs may be available at certain locations but many countries have very strict laws and severe punishments. If caught, there's nothing the ship or your country can do.

3. Don't Be Late

The ship will leave anyone behind and getting to the next port is the passengers responsibility.

4. Don't Try To Do Everything at Once.

Go slowly. It's not good being sunburned, worn out, hungover, and broke on the 2nd day. There is plenty of time to fit everything in.

5. Don't Become a Friendly Stalker

It's one thing to meet new friends for drinks, but quite another to follow them around all day. Hang around with a variety of people. Go to an event alone and make new aquaintances.

With these simple guidelines, an ocean cruise can be a wonderful vacation and an experience to remember.
